Kite & Board Guide

Kitesurfing kites typically range from 5 to 17 square meters in size. Our calculator uses a logarithmic formula for wind speeds above 16 knots, progressively reduces sizes in very strong winds (28+ knots), and suggests slightly larger kites overall for better performance. The appropriate kite size depends primarily on:

  • Your weight - Heavier riders need larger kites
  • Wind speed - Stronger winds require smaller kites
  • Skill level - Discovery level riders often need more power (larger kites)
  • Board type - Different boards have different power requirements
Calculation Factors
Size Adjustments
- Kite sizes are now 1.5% smaller for optimal performance
- 5% larger kites for 46-50kg weight range
- Maximum kite size limited to 16m²
Wind Scaling
- For winds above 16 knots: logarithmic formula for more gradual kite size reduction
- For winds above 22 knots: additional progressive reduction for safety

Experience Level Factors:

Discovery (25)
Larger kites for stability
Independent (22)
Balanced size for intermediate

Board Type Modifiers:

Twintip (1.0)
Standard kite size
Directional (0.95)
Slightly smaller kite
Kitefoil (0.85)
Significantly smaller kite

SAFETY FIRST!

Always prioritize your safety when kitesurfing

⚠️ YOUR SAFETY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY CALCULATION! ⚠️

When in doubt, choose a smaller kite for safety
Consider wind gusts and changing conditions
Always check local weather forecasts before riding
Take lessons from certified instructors if you're at Discovery level
Use a kite leash and wear protective gear (helmet and impact vest)
When in doubt ask local riders for advice about hazards and conditions
